Spring – Like Weather Brings Safety Reminders
There was an
obvious change in the scenery around town as the temperatures crept into
the sixties last week. The bike trail became noticeably busier, sporting
teams were practicing in the park after school, and it appeared many
individuals had taken their motorcycles out of winter storage and headed to
the roads. With these changes, and the likelihood that this pattern will
continue, the police department felt it might be a good idea to suggest
some simple safety reminders.
As the weather
continues to improve, the Lost Bridge Trail will be a hot attraction. We
will see many more bicyclists, joggers, walkers, and the like using the
trail. We encourage those who may use the trail to keep safety in mind at
all times. Bicyclists are encouraged to follow these simple safety tips:
inspect your bicycle to make sure it is safe before heading to the trail
(especially the brakes, tires and handlebars); wear an approved safety
helmet while riding; when approaching and overtaking others on the trail
give them proper warning; stop and make sure traffic is clear before
proceeding into an intersection; and as an adult make sure your young,
inexperienced riders are properly supervised.
The police
department would like to remind the motoring public to be aware of
increased traffic near the trail and park. Please decrease your speed as
you approach and travel though these areas. Remember, these are places
often used by young people who may be caught up in the excitement of their
activities. They may not be paying attention to vehicular traffic as
closely as we would like. Don’t assume that the bicyclist or pedestrian
sees you and is aware of your intentions.
Along with an
increase in the use of the trail and the park, the warmer weather will
surely bring out increased motorcycle traffic. Motorcycles provide far less
protection than cars and trucks and are not nearly as visible as other
vehicular traffic. All motorists need to be extra cautious and share the
road safely with each other.
The police
department is always looking to improve upon the service offered to our
citizens. If you observe any safety concerns in our community please
contact the department at 498-8443 or 381-8351. Your input is welcomed and
valued. |
